Set Up Server-Side GTM

Complete the Server-side Google Tag Manager setup first.

Configure Web Container

  1. Add Conversion Linker tag firing on “All Pages”
  2. Create Google Tag with:
    • GA4 Measurement ID
    • Configuration parameter: server_container_url = Hardal sGTM URL
    • Configuration parameter: first_party_collection = true
  3. Create GA4 Event tags for conversions (purchase, sign_up, etc.)

Configure Server Container

  1. Set up GA4 Client with:
    • Default GA4 paths: Enabled
    • Cookies and Client Identification: Server Managed
  2. Add Server Conversion Linker tag firing on “All Pages”

Create Google Ads Conversion Tags

For each conversion action:
  1. Go to “Tags” → “New”
  2. Select “Google Ads Conversion Tracking”
  3. Enter Conversion ID and Label from Google Ads
  4. Create trigger: Custom Event matching your GA4 event name
  5. Add condition: “Client Name equals GA4”

Set Up Enhanced Conversions

  1. Create User-Provided Data variable in web container
  2. Add user_data field to GA4 Configuration tag
  3. Enable Enhanced Conversions in server-side Google Ads tags
  4. Map user data variables (email, phone, address)

Test Implementation

  1. Enable Preview mode in both containers
  2. Trigger conversion events on website
  3. Verify Google Ads Conversion tags fire
  4. Check Google Ads for conversion data
